So I am going to start incorporating some health related posts into my blog. If you have known me for any period of time or followed this blog you know that I L-O-V-E health and fitness. I grew up surrounded by it with sports and a personal trainer/nutritionist mother. So I have been lucky enough to grow up learning the right decisions to make. Now have I've always made the right decisions with my health... ahem... no. No I haven't. But I still know right from wrong and I always come back to taking care of myself.

If you follow me on Instagram or Snapchat (@themoderntulip) you have noticed I've cleaned up my diet and I'm working out regularly now. I like to share tid bits of what I'm eating or doing to give you ideas and feel inspired yourself! Along with my workouts and eating cleaner I've regularly started taking supplements and vitamins.

A lot of questions in the "health" department seem to be about supplements and vitamins because I think we are all a little curious about what to take, when to take it and why. Here is what I use daily. Please keep in mind, I take these because they work for me. 

Prenatal (or multivitamin)
I've never stopped taking my prenatal because it's packed with everything a woman needs! You can simply take a multivitamin to get the majority of what you need too. The only reason I prefer a prenatal over a multivitamin is because it's packed with tons of folic acid. When you are pregnant that is important for the support of your baby's development and prevent birth defects. In general though, folic acid is good for a woman's body to help with red blood cell growth.

Olly Nutrition
I've been taking both olly sleep and olly beauty for a little over a month now and I'm loving both of them. The flavors are so yummy! The Olly Beauty is ruby red grapefruit and it is packed full of Biotin which is great for hair, skin and nails. Even my husband has noticed how long my hair is getting - praise Jesus! Doesn't it feel like your hair gets to a point and just stunts out? I'm finally getting passed that. The Olly Sleep is blackberry, mint and it is great for an awesome night of beauty sleep that this tired mama needs. The melatonin and amino acids help to calm and relax you.

Fish Oil
Fish Oil is packed full of Omega-3's and helps to maintain your triglyceride levels, which is great for your heart and reducing your risk for heart disease. I eat fish at least once a week for dinner, but it never hurts to get a little extra Omega-3's in!

BCAAs
This is what I'm most commonly asked about. I take BCAA's before every workout and sip on them while I'm working out. It's a powder you mix with your water and it helps support muscle growth, helps you to recover from an intense workout and replenishes your electrolytes. This is my favorite so far that I've tried. Mango is soooo yummy!

Whey protein 
I drink a protein shake immediately after my workout to replenish the muscles that I just tore.It helps build lean muscle and helps your muscles to recover post workout. This is the particular brand I buy on repeat because it tastes just fine and is a decent price point. I will occasionally drink a protein shake as a meal supplement too, but it's not my favorite thing to do. I'd rather eat something yummy and packed full of protein :)

And of course, make sure to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. You should drink at least half of your body weight in water a day. I currently weigh 127lbs and I drink 90+ oz a day. A little more never hurt anyone :) Straight up water is best, but y'all know I love me some Mio and I add it to most every bottle of water I drink. My favorite flavor is Tropical Fusion.

We made it safely to Ohio last night around midnight and boy is it cold! Mercy I don't care for the North. We are up here to celebrate Jon's grandpa turning 90 years young! Isn't that amazing? I wanted to share my go-to travel style and a few healthy snack options to keep you on track if you are traveling during the holidays.

Our car trip was about 8 hours so of course I made sure to wear something comfortable - basically pajamas without screaming pajamas and feeling awkward walking into a gas station to pee. I love oversized tunics for comfort and because they keep me warm in my freezer box of a car. Is it only my husband who blasts the cold air on road trips? These particular tunics are a favorite of mine because of their fit and how they cover my butt. I have this pretty pastel color too! You can bet your bottom - no pun intended :) - I wore my zella leggings because there are no greater leggings in all the land! Add some slip ons and we're all done here! I added the beanie and my favorite leather jacket for pit stops so I don't freeze my booty off. Oh and yes - I had to snag a Mimi's Creamery Coffee! So proud of my husband and his new found knowledge of espresso's and latte's!

Now on to the important stuff... the food. I don't know about you, but when I'm traveling is when I want to eat the worst. Something about being out of routine and off my schedule makes me want a large salty french fry and the world's largest soft drink in a styrofoam cup. So to keep myself from being bad I pack a small bag with some goodies so I can snack, but snack properly.



  • cuties/bananas/apples because they are easy to throw in a bag 
  • almond butter for the above fruit
  • trail mix. I made my own because it's so much cheaper than store bought and you get double!
  • lara bars/protein bars
  • kashi cookes
  • mio for my water
  • annnnnd I have to mention that my favorite road trip snack... not so healthy and a tad bit gross is............. ranch sunflower seeds. Yeah I'm gross. I suck on them, eat the seed and then spit the shell into a bottle. So not cute :-/

Fa la la la la... la. la. la.

I have had my house decorated since Thanksgiving, but I haven't taken the time to clean it to be photographed until now. It seemed like a lot of work and a really big waste of nap time :) haha totally kidding... sort of.

I am not a huge decorator. I actually despise it. I would rather decorate my entire home once and then never touch or rearrange anything ever again. I am always in awe of all the bloggers/instagrammers I see changing up rooms and decorating for every single holiday. I mean... Valentine's Day? No way!

Christmas is big enough and long enough that I will make the effort to pull down decorations and throw up lights. We didn't get our outside lights done this year. I was a little sad about that for Maddox's sake, but we won't let that happen again next year.

I'm not going to lie... this is the first time I have really missed shopping at Target. I mean helloooooo dollar section for all things seasonal and fun that I dont need - I loved that section! I haven't really mentioned anything, but I haven't shopped at Target in almost a year and that's kiiiiiinda a big deal for me. 

Anywho, here's my holiday decor!


My stockings are old from Target, the Christmas trees on my mantle are from Steinmart and that cute little "merry and bright" sign is my very own DIY project from a fabulous night out with some mama friends and a few bottles of wine :) all DIY projects should be done with friends, Christmas music blasting, wine and yummy food to munch on. I think I'd probably make more things, that's for sure.


My little gnome man came from TJMaxx and I'm in love with him. I've even picked up a few more similar ones to decorate with in other places.


The pillows I picked up from TJMaxx. I love that woven sweater pillow and it's even better it can work all year round. Because you know now your girl doesn't like to redecorate. One less pillow I have to replace.


I snagged the pillow cases pictured above and below off Amazon for $2.18 and $3.89 y'all!



I like to pretend adding a few decorative towels is all I need to do in the kitchen. These are Pioneer Woman from Walmart. I have a slight obsession with her line...


The tree and the deer are both from TJmaxx. Can you tell it's my new obsession?

I love pairing a dainty top with faux leather leggings because it's feels like a subdued way of being sassy. Sassy, just toned down a bit. Ya feel me? This top from XOMandySue was a love at first site type moment. I new I had to have it and it did not disappoint. It's super comfortable and flowy - hello post partum belly, please give me all the flowy tops. The detail in the neckline and on the sleeves is really what sold me though.

So this weekend I asked on Snapchat (themoderntulip) for questions to answer on today's post and y'all came through! I loved answering these so I will definitely do another q&a in the future!

Q: What do you order at Moe's?
A: This might be my favorite question because Snap peeps know I go every.single.Sunday for my cheat meal! I never get tired of it! I get nachos with chicken, rice, black beans, corn salsa, pickled jalapenos, black olives, queso on the side, extra chips and Strawberry Sprite. Delicious!

Q: How many months apart are Emery and Maddox?
A: 18 months

Q: What does your tattoo on your foot say and is your only one?
A: "carpediem" which means to seize the day. I have one more on my lower hip just below my bikini line of a cursive M that looks like a J and an M together for Jon and Maegen. I got it on my bachelorette party. Need I say more?

Q: How do you budget with just one income?
A: The answer is, we don't budget. It's not that I don't want to, because I would love to. But when you own your businesses it's truly impossible to budget. Our income is different every single month so I can't get a set number to go by ever. So I pay our bills first of course and now I just "know" what I can spend roughly at the grocery store or on frivolous things with what's left over.

Q: What's your favorite lipstick?
A:  Oh boy... I have a few. I am loving Bare Minerals - my favorite color being "infamous", MAC "twig" has always been my go-to color, Stila matte liquid lips are my favorite right now! I love the color "Baci" the best and "beso" is my go-to red.

Q: Do you miss working?
A: I do and I don't. I miss being with Jon every day, all day. We have always been two peas in a pod and working together was fun for us. Also being at home all day every day came as a shock to me in the beginning with Maddox because I'm such a go, go, go personality. Now I make myself busy with playdates, church events, little odd jobs, house projects, blogging stuff that I can hardly find time to just sit any more. I sort of prefer it that way. I feel super lazy when I stay at home and sit a lot.

Q: Where are your favorite places to shop?
A: Nordstrom, TJMaxx, Gap, Old Navy, Sephora, Ulta -- just to name a few :) homegirl loves to shop! I haven't ever mentioned it publicly to avoid confrontation, but I haven't shopped at Target in almost a year.

Q: Will you and Jon have more kids?
A: This is undecided at the moment. We have both always said 3-4. Neither of us feel strongly pulled in either direction. I don't know that I feel like our family is finished, but I would also be perfectly content raising Maddox and Emery. Personally I love the idea of a big family... we have a bunch of kids, our kids have a bunch of kids and we have it Parenthood style with big family dinners in the backyard :)

Q: What camera do you use for your pictures?
A: I use a Nikon D7100 with a 50mm lens for my blog photos. Instagram photos I take with my iPhone and I use Afterlight and Facetune to edit.
